The Scots-Irish were a significant part of the population in the South Carolina backcountry, including the area near Hartsville. The company’s first product was a paper cone for yarn. That was a few years back in the 1920s. Today, Sonoco is considered the world’s largest producer of composite cans, tubes, and cores, employing more than 22 thousand workers in more than 300 operations around the world.
